Reception[]

Critical response[]

Too Much received mixed reviews by music critics.

Amanda Murray of Sputnikmusic gave a positive review: Murray called "a genuinely great song", and that "the girls have obviously improved as singers on this record, and can finally pull off more difficult passages with at least an iota of conviction".

David Wild of Rolling Stone gave a positive review: Wild called that "Too Much" finds the Spice Girls dealing with the relative troubles of "too much of something" and "too much of nothing", and stating that "now that they've achieved world domination they're no longer the multiracial British girls next door but iconic commodities and mass-marketed objects of desire".

Yahoo! Music gave a positive review: Yahoo! Music compared it to 2 Become 1 as well as complimenting Mel C's performance "hit the spot".

Chart performance[]

Australia In Australia the single debuted on 25 January 1998 at number twenty-nine, and reached a peak position of nine five weeks later. It stayed fifteen weeks on the chart and received a Gold certification from ARIA.

Canada In Canada the song also peaked at nine.

New Zealand In New Zealand the single debuted on 21 December 1997 at number twenty, peaking at nine for two weeks, and staying a total of twelve weeks on the chart.

United Kingdom In the UK, it became a number-one hit for two weeks, claiming the Christmas number one of 1997, selling 252,000 copies in its first week and making the Spice Girls the first ever act to have their first six singles make number-one. It was certified Platinum, selling 667,940 copies, and spent fifteen weeks in the top 75. As songwriters, the Spice Girls set the record for the shortest time to achieve 6 #1 UK singles, taking 1 year 5 months from Wannabes first week at #1. They outpaced Lennon/McCartney, who took 1 year 6 months (From Me to You through I Feel Fine). Too Much was also the 22nd best seller of 1997, and the 100th best seller of 1998, as well as being the 76th best seller of the 1990s.

United States In the U.S. Too Much did better than its predecessor, Spice Up Your Life, and gained a good deal of airplay, but once again, was not as massive as Spice's singles had been. However, large sales and the extensive amount of airplay ensured that it became a hit. It would become the group's fourth and final U.S top 10 hit. It peaked at number nine, nine places higher than Spice Up Your Life had.

Europe In Europe, the reaction to Too Much was generally positive, though not as overwhelming as their previous releases. It reached the third position in Finland. In France the single peaked at twenty, staying fifteen weeks on the chart and receiving a Silver certification from SNEP. In Ireland, Too Much is the Spice Girls' only single not to enter the top three, and their only single not to enter the top ten in Sweden.
